MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-American composer Robert Lopez and wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez, bagged the Best Original Song award for Frozen’s “Let It Go” at the 86th Academy Awards on Monday (Sunday in Los Angeles, United States).
He is the first Filipino-American to win an Oscar, as well as the distinction of winning all four major award events – EGOT or the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.
Lopez and his wife, in an interview before the event, thanked Filipinos, who supported the Disney animated film Frozen and its popular theme song “Let It Go.”
Even before his victory, “Let It Go” has been acclaimed by both critics and the general public. Its original version and numerous covers have gone viral online.
It was no surprise that Broadway actress Idina Menzel was invited to sing it again at the Oscars.
Other contenders for the Best Song Award were “The Moon Song” from Her by Karen Orzolek and Spike Jonze, “Happy” from Despicable Me 2 by Pharrell Williams, and “Ordinary Love” from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom by U2.
In an earlier interview, Lopez said they were at awe with the competition, which included artists they look up to.
“We don’t think of us in the same league,” he said.
But Lopez has long been known as a songwriter, especially for co-creating the musicals The Book of Mormon and Avenue Q. He received Tony Awards for both. He also won a Grammy Award for The Book of Mormon and a Daytime Emmy Award for The Wonder Pets.
“Let It Go” was also nominated for the Golden Globe Awards but lost to U2’s “Ordinary Love.” It won in a similar category at the 19th Critics’ Choice Awards.
Frozen is the second highest-grossing animated film in history, next to Toy Story 3. It is also the second highest-grossing film for 2013, next to Iron Man 3.
