Italian city honors honest Filipina waitress

The Filipino spirit is indeed honest and noble, as another service-sector Filipina proved in Italy recently.

Jielyn “Giulia” Rodriguez, a waitress at a Tuscan restaurant, became a local celebrity in Arezzo, Italy, after turning over a wallet containing €1,200 (P73,794.54) to authorities.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said Rodriguez found the wallet on her way home after work on Dec. 20, 2013. Instead of pocketing it, she brought it to a local police station.

Days later, the police informed her of the owner’s gratitude, and their intent to reward her for her actions.

Her action earned her more than the owner’s award. Arezzo Mayor Dott. Giuseppe Fanfani and Philippine Vice Consul Kristine Margret Malang formally commended her last February 13 in front of City Council Members and local media.

Rodriguez was profusely grateful for the commendation, and hoped that other Filipinos in Italy will also be recognized for their positive contributions to the country.

The 31-year-old was born in Manila and came to Arezzo to join her mother, who is also a migrant worker. She now lives in the country with her husband and lone son.
